Year two in the League of Ohana. I left this section out until late in the season. Right now, we’re about 7 weeks away from the finish line and now seemed to be a good time to say a little something.
Due to a cancer diagnosis, our league president, Dre, has been on the shelf for most of the season. Then, we lost our vice president, unexpectedly, a little over a month ago. When I say “lost”, I don’t mean he left the league or got hurt. He died, following an emergency, but fairly routine surgery. Infection set in, and he never walked out of the hospital. It was devastating, for the league and for his family. He just became a grandfather for the first time. I think it hit me sideways because it reminds me of Dad’s last days. Let’s face it, I don’t handle death well, at all. I never really have and this shock to the system has left me in a bit of a daze.
Angel was four years older than me and from all indications, in better health than me, too. It’s scary. Angel was an amazing soul, who gave his all for those he loved. The cliche, “He’d give you the shirt off his back”, has never been more true. Angel was the heartbeat of our league and to watch the way the news has affected us all is at times both overwhelming and incredible. The way this league has picked everybody up is a testament to how much this league is a family. We’re a melting pot of black sheep, drunks, stoners, and lunatics. We began the season rallying around our president and we’ll end it by embracing him and Angel’s family.
This week (4/1/23), we bowl Angel’s team and it’ll feel so strange. Everybody who’s bowled with me knows I’m not always the easiest person to deal with when I’m bowling like ass. But, Angel managed to put a smile on my face at times like that, when we bowled against, or near him. If I start bowling like ass this week, I’ll try to remember that.
We’re not just the “League of Ohana”. WE ARE OHANA!
RIP Angel. We’ll see each other again, one day, somewhere on the other side…
